Each Wave Comes Only Once

Each Wave Comes Only Once - MP35:08

Each Wave Comes Only Once is an original composition by Daniel Lee Gibby for 3-7 octaves handbells.

This gentle piece is as chill as a sunrise at the beach which lets an audience enjoy many of the sounds of handbells. For an extra beautiful vibe, pay special attention to dynamic markings and add non-musical performance techniques.

This text or a portion thereof may be used as an introduction:

Few acts of creation are as much of an opportunity for expression and collaboration as
playing music together. Each of us has capabilities, but when we come together, we
can do more. Every musician brings their own special feeling to a song, especially in a
bell ensemble.

The waves of the ocean can teach us many lessons. Without a closer look the ocean
seems to repeat the same constant song, but each unique wave comes only once.

Knowing that every moment in life is unique is a blessing and a challenge. We can let
hard times pass, knowing they won’t last forever. But sometimes, we forget to cherish
the happy moments that won’t stick around.

There may be some measure in “Each Wave Comes Only Once” that is a repeat of
another (although the composer tried to make them all unique), but even if there are
two measures that are the same, we can be sure they will never be played and heard the
same exact way twice.

The choices we make constantly push and pull those around us. Each thought and
action shape our lives, creating lifetimes as different as each wave of the sea. Life is in
the details; just as the timing and tone of each note will be unique, no matter how hard
we try to play perfectly.

Let your own special influence shine! But remember, just as you affect others, there is
nothing that you can do on your own. Even though each wave is different, we can look
to others around us who are on a similar journey.

We all uniquely contribute to the beauty of the songs of the world.
